In 2022, more than 90% of the 300k people surveyed named goblin mode the word of the year. The Oxford University Press defined this specific term as a type of behavior. Described by some as self-indulgent, a new way of living developed during the pandemic. Working from home influenced a more casual lifestyle for many.
Radical departures from social norms look different from one person to the next. Some examples of goblin mode include staying in your pajamas all day. For those doing video conferencing, that might mean from the waist down (tee hee). Who needs a glass when you can drink from the container? Does everyone need a daily shower? Have you noticed people grocery shopping in their robe and house slippers? Is your dining table a Jenga game with stacked take-out boxes? If so, you might be engaging in goblin mode.
My inquiry is around the payoff when trading personal responsibility for an unmade bed. Is there a benefit? Feeling overwhelmed activates the sympathetic nervous system to influence behavior. When the fight-or-flight response triggers a biological process, all systems are put on guard. Long periods of survival mode are exhausting. My intuition tells me goblin mode is connected to stress and feeling overwhelmed. But once again, what is the payoff? Let’s get a whisper to help clear things up on the subject:
Goblin mode is part of an evolutionary adaptation to modern living. There is an underlying stress with the current energy patterns on the Earth. A large portion of the population is experiencing upheaval and an overall unsettled feeling. A subtle undercurrent of energy-influencing behavior is what humans are facing daily. Multiple threats contribute to activation of the sensory system. These threats can destabilize the multidimensional bodies that make up the aura. Simple activities can turn off the nervous system, allowing for moments of restoration. Anything that slows down the system allows the mind, body, and spirit to rest, which leads to recovery. Measures that improve overall stability can be very beneficial. An increasing number of negative effects on the human energy body demands adaptation.
In order to gain freedom from exposure to a negative spiral, goblin mode can be a positive antidote. Stepping back in any form leads to greater self-awareness. Restorative activities look different for everyone. If spending the day in your pajamas connects you to your inner child, you get to better understand that part of yourself. Letting your inner child come out and play can remind you of the magic and beauty in the world.
Every type of behavior needs moderation to achieve balance. Observing behavior is one way to self-evaluate. If your activities get stuck in an unhealthy pattern, you might be well served to have a talk with your inner goblin. You’ll know if you are living a balanced life by your ability to sustain normal energy levels. Connect with your joy, your faith, and your spirit with a healthy measure of goblin mode. The playful approach comes when you refuse to carry a burden or take things too seriously. When your creativity is free to express love for life, your inner light shines on the rest of the world.
Bring joy, ease suffering and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
