On some level, we all try to calculate our moves. Maneuvering life involves risks. I know mine does! Calculated risk-taking depends on learning to make decisions based on self-direction. With decisions, we will always experience emotions. To maintain balance requires taking responsibility for the decision. Once I have made a calculated move, that’s when I start to feel vulnerable and exposed (tee hee).
As a non-recovered optimizer, I spend way too much time trying to balance the risk verses the reward. If I commit to investing my energy, is there a reasonable possibility of benefit? We see successful people who would say taking risks is a necessary part of life. But if you don’t take a risk, you are less likely to experience failure! Part of maturing can lead to becoming more risk-avoidant. That brings me back to the idea of balance. Some have an ‘all or nothing’ approach to life. Personal growth may be about learning to moderate risk-taking.
Calculated means done with full awareness of the consequences. Even when the desired outcome is not likely, I can easily make up stories to support my decision. Being thoughtful and deliberate with full awareness requires a certain level of honesty. What embellishes honesty is desire, which brings in the emotional component. Let’s calculate the next risk to balance the potential reward found in a whisper from spirit:
Decisions in life are calculated to produce a particular effect. Several aspects are considered by giving thought beforehand. Replace calculated with intentional, since both connect energy to a desired outcome. Taking a intentional risk is akin to letting go of the need to control. Carefully weighed actions can be a conscious decision to leave your comfort zone.
The biggest block to taking a risk is the emotion of fear. Humans can develop the fear mechanism to become risk-averse. Often this is an attempt to remain inside a zone of safety. Avoiding uncertainty means there is less chance of the discomfort of failure. Loss aversion creates a learned behavior that involves a lack of trust. Potential loss is potential pain, which is a stronger emotion than passion for success.
It takes courage to assume full responsibility for risk-taking actions. There is a lot to consider when making an honest calculation of what actions to take. Strong emotions can override any rational approach to a decision. Emotions will interfere with risk assessment and a balanced perspective. In truth, people take calculated risks every day. Life equals risk.
It is your mind and heart working in harmony that produces the ideal environment for calculating decisions. Gain or loss should not be the main factor in every calculation. Some of the most meaningful experiences in life are not based on the decisions you make. On the path of life you will find the hidden rewards that were never calculated as part of the journey.
