Dissent is having a different opinion, often related to a simple disagreement. The first sign of dissent is observable in the language people use. The energy of dissent is the first signal of a refusal to participate. Dissent can appear as a surface-level response, but the underlying issue can go much deeper.
When disagreement occurs, thoughts that follow will be key to future decisions. Opposing viewpoints are inevitable, but they need not involve disrespect. As a retired people-pleaser, I found it challenging to engage with conflict on any level. My experience is that circumstances will force the moment. That’s when a dissenting opinion is the only way to remain true to myself. The best me needs to show opposition with genuine compassion for myself and others.
Dissent can be an important function in our society. Voicing alternative ideas is valuable to group settings and teamwork. It brings conformity to critical thinking. Being authentic can be challenging when it comes to opposing thoughts or ideas. This especially true if you are wrong (tee hee). Our ego doesn’t allow much room for humility. Observing dissent from within can be a valuable tool for growth and empowerment. Speaking of valuable tools, let’s turn to a whisper on the subject of dissent:
The human species is currently in a struggle with personal evolution. With information at your fingertips, the sense of personal discovery can diminish. A mind in constant motion is not one that listens well. One result is opposition taking on the sense there are winners and losers. Collaboration suffers from the unwillingness to participate in meaningful debate.
Curiosity also suffers from the lack of openness. It’s important to develop awareness that leads to going beyond an initial position. Going further usually means searching for common ground in the situation. Without that movement, bitterness can occur from the perception of personal affront. Once disrespect has occurred, an attitude or bias is formed. This can be the start of an energy leak or the formation of a negative input.
Universal Laws tell us there will always be an output equal to the input. If both the input and the output are negative, a contraction occurs. This means your energy is the first refusal to engage. Bitterness will remain active in the heart well beyond the first emotional response. It can be layered with several experiences that lead to a lower emotion. Such a compromise has a negative impact on making decisions.
When offering an opposing viewpoint, it is important to offer recognition. There is value to being acknowledged in any disagreement. With a small amount of recognition, the chances of success rise dramatically. Conscious awareness opens all channels of communication. Language can elevate minds into greater connection, where agreement becomes the heart of the matter. Show compassion for yourself as you would for others to promote positive movement. Greater love for life itself is the product of recognition in the face of opposition.
Bring joy, ease suffering and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
Blessings, Russell
“Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.”
