Angel Whispers – Iceberg

Sigmund Freud created a psychoanalytical model composed of three distinct parts. The ego, the superego, and the id make up the Iceberg Model of the Mind. On the surface is the conscious mind, the ego, which steers the iceberg using the moral compass of the superego. Beneath the surface is the unconscious mind, the id, which is the larger part of the iceberg. This is where you will find primal aspects of instinct, aggression, and sexual urges.

The father of psychology at the time used the iceberg model to study human behavior. They are not parts of the brain, but a way to conceptualize important mental functions. According to his theory, our most primitive self contains aggressive drives and urges where the motivation is hidden. Our id gives us instinct supported by memories long forgotten. The ego faces our reality, while the superego guides moral behavior to influence guilt when standards aren’t met.

One problem we face is that each of the three elements evokes demands on the other. The superego and the id struggle between good versus evil, rules versus defiance, fantasy versus reality. Inner conflict is inevitable with the ego acting as the mediator. Our ego must act to prevent our becoming overwhelmed by the primal urges beneath the surface. I believe the iceberg analogy holds great clues to our overall personality, character, spiritual development, and evolution.

An entire ocean liner was sunk by an iceberg! This tells me I need more awareness around what lies beneath the surface (tee hee). My id is a child who needs to be constantly fed, so how do I handle those primitive urges and worldwide aggression? It must be time for a whisper:

The ego uses primary and secondary thought processes. Both are working with principles related to perspectives on reality. When anxiety is experienced, a response comes forward in the form of a mental strategy. The ego, superego, and id can work in harmony to resolve conflict. Neurosis and maladaptive behavior occur when one of the three elements dominates. Trauma is the root cause of an overused defensive mechanism. To seek healing is to seek balance.

Humans are at a nexus between the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius. The subconscious feelings of the heart are in conflict with the development of the conscious mind. In order to evolve as a species, humans must realize that the good-versus-evil model is outdated. It is time for movement toward cultivating higher levels of love, compassion, and understanding.

The link between the ages is calling for humans to connect, free from senseless aggression. If the human species is to survive, destruction of the planet must cease. Accepting the truth of your reality is what will allow love to lead through the darkness. Each person knows right from wrong. This defining energy lives in the core of primal energy. It is a memory that may be hidden but can surface through higher consciousness.

Knowing right from wrong is who you are, not how you act. In the depth of your soul is the light of honesty that awakens the spirit. This is where you will find true self-actualization and transformation. Your inner world can overcome any challenge from the outer world.

Bring joy, ease suffering and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
Blessings, Russell

“The mind is like an iceberg. It floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.”
