I had a session with a young man early in my career. He went home and told his mother, “Russell is a ‘Protestant Mystic’.” (tee hee). That is the first time I remember being called one. Mystic is one of those words that carry different meanings. A mystic is a person who seeks answers by contemplation and self-surrender. Their goal is unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute.
If you are seeking a direct experience with the divine without restriction, you might be a mystic. Searching for such an experience requires a high level of vulnerability and openness. Imagine going out into the wilderness and getting lost in nature. You find yourself surrounded by magic and the mystery that can only be found in nature. You would be in the middle of an area threatened by our world, yet facing an undeniable truth. This metaphor describes the modern mystic. They might feel like an outcast, threatened by their very nature.
Many famous psychologists were mystics due to their passion to seek the inner life. They can see with their eyes closed. By doing so, they break the bond to the outer world to create a defining sense of self. Let’s further explore the mystic with help from spirit:
Within a mystic, the aim of the soul is toward the discoveries found in the mystery. Character and identity are molded by their union with spirit. Their direction is pointed at the unknown. Abstract realities are condemned by the conscious mind but embraced by the soul. A thirst for the experience is never satisfied in the heart of the mystic.
Mystics are often outcasts, for they are misunderstood. Others fear a mystic the same way they fear the unknown. A mystic feels the pain of being different and from their attachment to the material world. Discouragement is the daily reminder of life on Earth. The mystic remembers freedom of the physical body.
In search of answers to existential questions, the mystery becomes their playground. A mystic doesn’t have to be shown the truth through logic and evidence. They feel the truth through the heart. A union with divinity is created through several experiences or a single awakening. Seekers of the light, mystics approach life with open hearts and minds. The ego dissolves into the ultimate experience of communion with spirit. A mystic is born thorough finding joy in the mystery worth singing about. Earth is the perfect forum for those with mystical inclinations. The mystics are among you as ordinary people living an ordinary life.
The embodiment of nature, the mystic seeks transformation on their destined path. They demonstrate humanity and the evolution of the human spirit. You will know them by their eyes, which are the windows into their soul. If you dare to join hearts with a mystic, love will flow. A light will shine to illuminate the truth of who you are and who you will be. The life of a mystic comes with the promise of adventure as they seek something they already know.
Bring joy, ease suffering and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
Blessings, Russell
“In the days ahead, you will either be a mystic (one who has experienced God for real) or nothing at all.”
