Transition is defined as the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another. Change seems to be a constant these days. Transition is a word that some would use in place of change, but they are not the same. Transition describes the inner process of dealing with the thoughts and emotions around change. Part of that process involves letting go of old ways to make room for change.
Moving into a new reality is not always graceful. Everyone moves at their own pace. My ability to adjust is connected to those around me, which becomes part of the process. How can I let go if the people around me are holding onto the old paradigm? Reorientation can take days, weeks, or even months, depending on my level of resistance to change. If the change is exciting and represents a big life adjustment, resistance might be lower. When the letting go is unwanted, the process is more challenging. After all, I am creature of habit! Life in a pandemic was a huge transition for all. We moved to a new city during the lockdown. Then we lost a loved one. It was period of large and small transitions. Some were easy while others are still unfolding. Could it be in our DNA that any change will carry a certain level of resistance? Is this inherent with any human facing change? The questions are raised and the adjustment is needed to transition into a whisper:
The beginning of a period of transition is marked by an ending. Transitions end with a new beginning. Any change has a way of forcing the adjustment, which can lead to discomfort. Big life transitions will become a marker or a milestone etched into the soul. Regardless of the excitement or distress, change can become a constant feature that defines who you are and why you came.
Transitions can be stressful due to the loss of that which you have become accustomed to. The more direct the impact, the higher the stress levels. If change is sudden or you are unprepared, negative energy from the shadow can emerge. Navigating through the emotions and stress will act to measure your current mindset. During transitions, the observer within gets a chance to evaluate personal growth and evolution.
Many transitions come without warning, which means little time to prepare. It is always grounding to have had the time to develop a plan. A healthy mindset is better achieved following the release of an expectation. Anticipation can support the development of a routine as part of any change. When going through a transition in one area of life, it can be helpful to maintain the routines in all other areas. Being firmly established in all but one area can lower the stress.
Times of transition are when the inner voice seems to get louder. Monitor those conversations to understand how you are coping. Then modify the mental chatter to be more supportive. You can embrace the change when giving yourself a chance through harmonization of internal energies. The same compassion you have for everyone else can be the same you show toward yourself. Treat yourself like you would a best friend to better navigate your transition. Ambition and expectations can create blind spots to the opportunity that comes with change.
Bring joy, ease suffering and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
